Releasing at the very tail-end of the PS3’s lifecycle, it was always inevitable for Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic magnum opus to receive a revised and improved PS4 version. The Last of Us Remastered is exactly that, updating Joel and Ellie’s original state-spanning journey with all-new visuals and a better framerate. Needless to say, if you’re yet to play what many players consider to be one of the best games of all time, this is the best way to do it.
The Last of Us Remastered is primarily a third-person action game with horror and survival elements, presenting a vision of the future that has been ravaged by a world-ruining infection called Cordyceps. This fungus-like disease has caused most of humanity to transform into rampant flesh-eaters, leading you as Joel to try and save what’s left of the population by escorting Ellie to a resistance group claiming they can make a cure.
Most of your time in The Last of Us is spent quietly avoiding the bloaters, clickers and runners, taking them down when necessary using all manner of makeshift weaponry and stealth tactics. Joel’s arsenal can be upgraded by visiting benches, and it’s here where you can put all scrap you’ve acquired to good use. The Last of Us differs from its genre peers in that it’s story is thought-provoking as well as gripping, making it a must-play on PS4.
