Despite being known for PlayStation-exclusive shooters like Ratchet & Clank and Resistance, developer Insomniac surprised everyone in 2018 by releasing their own open-world take on Marvel’s much-beloved wall-crawler. This was the first dedicated Spider-Man game to hit modern consoles, using the full power of PS4 to set players off within a beautifully realised and vibrant rendition of New York City. You’ll soon discover swinging through it to be a breeze and infinitely freeing.
Marvel’s Spider-Man tells an original storyline separate from the continuity featured in the comic books, meaning that anyone can jump in and immediately engross themselves within Peter Parker’s double life. Most of your time will be spent traversing New York’s various districts, taking down thugs and saving innocent bystanders. It isn’t long, however, until a nefarious plot involving Negative Man rocks Peter’s world and he’s forced to step in.
Your superhero skills include the ability to web up enemies into a spin, concussive blasts and other gadgets. All of these are readily upgradeable as you advance throughout the story, as are a wide range of classic Spider-Man costumes that can be equipped at any time and offer their own suite of unique abilities. Mechanics like this are what allows this PS4 rendition of Spider-Man to usurp many previous titles, fully advancing the character into the new age of gaming while retaining what made swinging through city blocks so fun in the cult-classic Spider-Man 2.
