Though God of War may have initially began as a rather juvenile hack-and-slash series back in 2005 when it first debuted, it was reinvented 13 years later with a thoughtful reboot featuring a grittier and much more thoughtful tone. Kratos had gotten older, Greek mythology had been switched out for Norse and the new leviathan axe weapon added a new layer of depth to combat.
Joined by his son Atreus, Kratos must now make his way throughout most of the nine realms, doing battle with several gods and demonic beings to reach the highest summit and scatter his wife’s ashes. The story is a lot more personable than before, as you can probably tell, but this swift change of tone is doubly matched by a new over-the-shoulder perspective. Slice and dice enemies up close or send your axe flying to take them out from afar.
Many players consider God of War (2018) to not just be a great game, but the very best single-player exclusive title on PlayStation 4. Better yet, even if you’re new to the franchise you can jump in right away, as the new Norse setting largely sees the eponymous hero gain a fresh start. While there are slight Easter Eggs and call-backs long-time fans will recognise, this pseudo reboot caters to everyone.
Become the god of war you were always meant to be and experience one of the finest action-adventure on PlayStation 4. A sequel is strongly thought to already be in the works, so catch up before the inevitable announcement of the second God of War 2.
